In these recession times, your fitness trainer might be a casualty of cut backs and, as a result of pinching pennies, you may end up pinching inches around your waist. Several web sites offer free tools and resources for motivation, fun and online accountability. Although not all of them tell you what to do or how to to it, they can elevate your level of enjoyment in your workouts by enabling you to capture, visualize, share and create an engaging history of activity information. More than a collection of data, these Web-based services help you identify training weaknesses, provide education to reach your goals and celebrate your achievements.

My advice is to browse them all and try one out. As a daily reminder of your fitness goals, save the web site as your home page.

Fitness Journal.comFitness Journal: One of the first Web-based programs to allow you to track strength training sets and reps, along with cardio and weight loss goals, this excellent site has a user-friendly interface, which offers colourful, appealing graphs, charts and reports. Members can share data with friends, on the message boards or with training buddies the world over. It has great fitness-site resources and tools, but the main appeal is how easy it is to use the program and track up to 72 activities. You can also customize your workout, print it and take it with you to the gym or access it through the iPhone and Blackberry application. Although the site is offering a one-week free trial to it's program, you'll have to pay $9.70 Canadian monthly for a subscription. This program is free for seven days when you register and enter promo code: demo8. If you subscribe, register a friend and get 30 days free service added to your account.

Shapelink.comShapelink: A training and nutrition diary, this easy-to-use site gives you control over your training and progress. The programs are customizable for all kinds of training or goals, including cardio, weight lifting, weight loss or sports you play. Blogs, groups and forums, let you and your friends follow each other's progress. Advanced statistics are available with a paid service upgrade, but the basic service is great that you won't feel you're missing out.
